At Shotokan Black Belt Academy, we teach Shinaji Shotokan. The Shinaji style is the blending of traditional Japanese Kenkojuku Shotokan developed by Master Okano, and modern JKA Shotokan developed by Master Nakayama. Shinaji places a strong emphasis on deep stances, powerful kicks, and explosive strikes, with an aggressive mindset of ending any confrontation quickly and decisively.

Kihon are the fundamentals and foundational

techniques practiced in Shotokan Karate,

including stances, blocks, punches and kicks.

It is the systematic repetition of individual

techniques and combinations designed to build

muscle memory, correct form, and power,

serving as the bridge between Kata and Kumite.

Kata is a choreographed, pre-arranged sequence of

techniques, including punches, blocks, kicks and

strikes-performed against imaginary, multiple

attackers, with each movement designed for a

specific self-defense purpose.

This is the study and practical application of Kata

movements, where Karateka analyze how to use

these techniques in real combat.

Kumite is the sparring component of Shotokan

Karate. We consider it the most important of

the three pillars. It involves applying techniques

against real opponents to develop timing,

distance, control, and strategy.

Kumite starts with one-step sparring to learn

basic timing and distancing before advancing to

freer forms. This gives our students the ability

to operate under stress and end any conflict

quickly.

WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT US

" When our son started getting bullied last year, me and my husband put him in Shotokan Black Belt Academy. They taught him confidence and how to handle the bully. That bully has never looked at our son again."

While traditional Shotokan is primarily an empty-hand system, we

incorporate Kobudo to teach our students how to use Okinawan

weapons. They include, The Sai, Bo, Tonfa, Nunchaku and the Kama.

These are taught to students who have advanced to at least a blue belt,

and the same fundamentals that are implemented In Kihon, Kata and

Kumite are also implemented in Kobudo.
