Gichin Funakoshi was known as the "father of modern karate". He was also the founder of Shotokan Karate. The art we consider here at Shotokan Black Belt Academy the very best in the world!

Yoshitaka, son of Gichin Funakoshi was the architect of modern Shotokan as we know it today. He developed long distance striking using a deep stance. Yoshitaka also developed high kicks and a kumite style of striking fast and hard ending any confrontation quickly.

Tomosaburo Okano is the founder

of Kenkojuku Shotokan which is

the blending of both Gichin and

Yoshitaka Funakoshi's style of

Shotokan. In 1942, Okano was

given permission by father and son

to start a karate research club in

Tokyo, Japan.

With their guidance and blessing, he named the dojo Kenkojuku. Kenkojuku

Shotokan became a dynamic and explosive style of Shotokan. It consists of

deep stances, powerful kicks with fast, hard strikes.

In 1949, Nakayama helped establish the JKA.

By 1956, he restructured the Shotokan Karate

training program to follow both traditional

karate and methods developed in modern

sports sciences. JKA has become one of the

most explosive styles of Shotokan.

Sascha Blasi is the founder of

Shinaji Shotokan which is the

blending of Kenkojuku Shotokan

and JKA Shotokan. In 2020, Kaiso

Blasi understood the combined

effect of the two styles would be

greater than the sum of their

individual parts.

By blending the styles' distinct strengths, Shinaji Shotokan has

produced superior results. In doing so, practitioners continue to

push the evolution of Shotokan forward beyond limitations.
